This Is Why I Follow Diplo
I follow about 160 people on twitter. Some of those people I've met and some people are ones I'd like to meet. Out of all the people I follow, @diplo is the best. He has his twitter game on lock. The stuff he tweets is just ridiculous but he gives us enough truth to continue to read his tweets everyday. The whole Mad Decent team are fun to follow any way. Yet, Diplo just has a contagiously fun personality. Follow him and you will see what I mean.
MOOMBAHTON MegaMix on Foolcast
Just saw this over at the Fools Gold Blog
Dave Nada, the genius behind the Moombahton movement, has done a podcast for Fools Gold Records. On a rainy day like today, you don't really feel like living in a 130 bpm world. Lets slow it down to around 108 and get a little more Romantic. Nada's Latin influences can be heard through out the mix. You can download the mix directly as an mp3 if you like, courtesy of the Fools Gold Records Blog here. (Just right click and save as).

Tony Hawk & Andy MacDonald Blow Your Mind
Recently Tony Hawk met up with long time buddy Andy MacDonald for a cover shoot. They were attempting to do something that hasn't been seen before. Skateboarding has changed so much in its short life. The guys who were once a "menace" to society skating all over your city are now making tons of money. Skateboarding has become as common to our youth as playing basketball. With skateboardings popularity athletes are pushing the limits of what can be done on a skateboard. Danny Way jumped the Great Wall of China. Seriously.
It reminds me of the old Bones Brigade.
So what could our dynamic duo come up with? Well Tony and Andy decided to do something more familiar to their roots. They did their shoot on a vert ramp. Check out the cover.
Watch the video for proof.
It reminds me of the old Bones Brigade.

Where Has Jin Been?
My brother sent me a link to a video that Jin has done recently. Apparently Jin has been in Hong Kong hanging out in the Cantonese scene. He is still writing rhymes and he still has all that talent you heard on Freestyle Fridays.
Here he is lettin this kid have it:
So now instead of battling and dissing people, his rhymes are laced with positive lines. I hope all the best for Jin and his career. I'm still a huge fan.

Flashing Lights in DC
U Street Music Hall is becoming my favorite venue. New York City's Flashing Lights party is coming to DC's UHall on April 8th. One week before Trouble & Bass start their monthly party. The Flashing Lights Crew does NOT disappoint. Check out some of their mixes avail for free on their website http://www.flashinglightslightslights.com
Here's a little background into the trifectic trio: FLASHING LIGHTS is the neon brainchild of some of the city’s most beloved selectors: DJ AYRES (responsible for 7+ sweaty years of The Rub parties at Southpaw), NICK CATCHDUBS (remix/mixtape phenom and co-founder of the hit indie label Fool’s Gold) and JUBILEE (BK bass sweetheart behind her own Nightshifters imprint). Over the past year, these three constantly-touring DJs have worked tirelessly to launch a genuinely fun and unpretentious electronic dance party in their own hometown. HOUSE+DISCO+TECHNO+RAVE as the block-letter flyers plainly state: no hype, just tuuunes!
The FL trio have branded their party as a true destination, thanks to exciting and unpredictable sets blending brand new music and revitalized dance classics. With guest sets from big name friends (A-Trak, Klever, Drop The Lime), local heroes (Todd Edwards, DJ Dara, Sabo) and breaking talent (La Roux, Toddla T, Nadastrom), each edition brings new musical delights. By teaming up with party promoters Mean Red and Good Peoples, the team has been able to keep the crowd bumping in giant clubs, underground lounges and hijacked dim sum restaurants alike. As the New Yorker says, “recent Flashing Lights parties have been high-spirited, low-attitude events that recall the mood of New York City dance clubs from the early eighties, like Danceteria. Remember: the event is actually for dancers, rather than for people who need to text each other in public.”

Tiga Popping Up On the Internets
Lets keep it Canadian today. From the amazing man who brought us the likes of Chromeo and the highly addictive song Shoes, we get this gem. What You Need is one of those songs that uses sounds that normally would be ear wrenching sound melodic. It takes a lot of skill to make noise into music and Tiga does it flawlessly with What You Need. Check it out.

TaxLo! Cullen Stalin's Bday with KID SISTER, NADASTROM, DJ SEGA and guests!
Saturday, April 10, 2010 at 8:00pm
Location: Sonar
Street: 407 E Saratoga St
City/Town: Baltimore, MD
Every spring for the past five years or so, there is a big party. Last year the MSTRKRFT/BIRD PETERSON bill grew to include BLAQSTARR, AMANDA BLANK, SPANK ROCK, and DEVLIN & DARKO. In previous years we've seen DIPLO, SCOTTIE B, NINJASONIK, and many more club-rattling acts take the stage around this time.
We're doing it again in 2010! Don't miss the first area appearance of...
KID SISTER (Live! Only area appearance! Chicago, Fool's Gold)
http://kidsistermusic.com/
KID SISTER has been featured in the New York Times, Urb, Complex, and just about everywhere else. She's been nominated for a BET award alongside Eve and Missy Elliott. She has performed on TRL and recorded a video with Kanye West. All years before her album dropped.
A certified party-starter, Kid Sister is as comfortable collaborating with Chromeo as with Cee-Lo; rapping alongside David Banner or over beats by Steve Angello or Sinden. Her debut full-length, ULTRAVIOLET (Fool's Gold/Downtown) demonstrates her versatility and unstoppability.
This will be Kid Sister's debut performance in the entire Bmore/DC area, and her only area appearance on this tour! You can't even catch her in Philly...
Oh and speaking of Philly...
DJ SEGA (Mad Decent/Brick Bandits)
http://myspace.com/djsegatheblackknight
DJ SEGA is Baltimore filtered through Philly. He's been a true pioneer, introducing Baltimore sounds to the Philadelphia club scene for years - since he was a teenager, dropping monthly mixtapes. He has taken Baltimore club and flipped it until it's almost a new genre, and is hailed as the master of "Philly Club." This brought him to the attention of internationally-known producer Diplo, who quickly signed Sega to his label, MAD DECENT.
DJ SEGA has played TaxLo several times before, most notably at the epic Death Set/Bonde do Role/Future Islands party in May 2008. Get psyched to hear his latest bangers!
But wait, there's more!
NADASTROM (Dave Nada and Matt Nordstrom, Dubsided, DC)
http://myspace.com/nadastrom
The duo of Matt Nordstrom and Dave Nada should need no introduction to TaxLo regulars. DAVE NADA has been a longstanding resident at TaxLo since the party's days at the (old) Talking Head Club. Since those days, his DJ and production trajectory brought him to collaborate with DC house innovator MATT NORDSTROM, and the result was the international smash collaboration, NADASTROM.
Quickly recognized as the future by Switch and Tittsworth, NADASTROM has released a string of bestselling releases and remixes for DUBSIDED, T&A, FOOL'S GOLD, MAD DECENT and more. House music to stagedive to.
Of course, there will be plenty of surprises too, and this will all be hosted by
TAXLO DJs SIMON PHOENIX and CULLEN STALIN

The Twelves Essential Mix
I know this is 3 months old, but I finally got around to listening to it. Download this essentials mix by the Twelves.
From their myspace -
Without a doubt The Twelves are one of the best production duos to have emerged from the blogs, their breakthrough came in July of 2007 when they remixed the track "Boyz" from M.I.A's sophomore album, Kala. The reworked track with an added club feel resulted in one of the most talked about remixes of 2007. The blog coverage surrounding the remix was extensive and eventually the track started to appear in sets from high profile djs around the world, including Kissy Sell Out, who played it on BBC's "In New Djs We Trust" series.
The duo followed "Boyz" with equally well received remixes for Asobi Seksu and Erlend Oye, both of which featured on a number of blogs and music related sites. This caught the attention of a number of labels, including Modular Records who commissioned a "Twelves Remix" of the song "Get Lucky" by New Young Pony Club.
This year has been a very successful one for The Twelves, they were most recently commissioned to remix big name tracks such as La Roux’s "In For The Kill", A-Ha’s "Take On Me", Groove Armada's "Drop the Tough" and Metric’s "Help I'm Alive". They also did a mini-mix for the BBC Radio 1 show, Annie Mac’s Mash-up, it was so well received that they have been invited back to do another one at some point in the year.
Their success on the blog scene has been phenomenal this year, their cover of Daft Punk’s "Night Vision" being number 1 on the Hype Machine on four separate occasions along with their Mini-Mix and the remix of A-Ha which also topped their charts. The Twelves productions are always a constant force in the Hype Machine charts, such is the massive fan base they have in the online world they have amassed an astonishing 1.9 million plays on their myspace player too.
They played SXSW, with Spin Magazine making them one of their nine unknown acts to watch at the event, they are making their UK debut at this year’s prestigious LoveBox event and are making their debut at Paris’ legendary Social Club. Their live show is a one of a kind unique blend of live keyboards, drum machines, mash-ups and remixing on the fly.

Coheed and Cambria - The Broken
Finally! I have been waiting for years to see an epic film with Coheed and Cambria doing the soundtrack. I haven't seen that movie 9: yet but this will have to do for now. If you like Transformers meet Alien epic fight for the planet type films, you will love this music video. I am a huge fan of Coheed and Cambria, but recently their music hasn't been the same for me. I think its the over production. I enjoyed their epic music when it was raw and amateur sounding. Here is the video. Get some popcorn,

Black Eyed Peas
Here is a short recap of the Black Eyed Peas. We have will.i.am, apl.de.ap, and Taboo from 1995 until now. They were first known as a hip hop group with Kim Hill singing on their tracks until 2000. They pick up Fergie in 2003 on Elephunk, and thats where we get the songs Where Is The Love, Shut Up, and Hey Mama (The first "silhouette" commercial for iPod).
Next came Monkey Business (2005), the album that brought us Don't Phunk with My Heart, Don't Lie, Pump It, and my favorite, My Humps.
Most recently in 2009 they released The E.N.D. (The Energy Never Dies). If you have been in a coma this last year, this album was huge for them. It is a more electronic sound than before. I believe this is going to be the trend with most pop and hip hop going forward (ex. Lady Gaga etc.). The E.N.D. gave birth to Boom Boom Pow, Imma Be, and I Gotta Feeling (produced by David Guetta).
Following its release, will.i.am remarked that the album had been inspired by a trip to Australia, specifically the sound of The Presets' My People. "The energy on the Presets' small little stage was crazy energy. That song My People - that shit is wild," will.i.am said, "That's the reason why this record sounds the way it does - my three months in Australia."
The BEP are huge, they've had many #1 spots on US and international charts. They've won 6 Grammys and have been nominated 16 times in the past 6 years.
will.i.am has been doing a lot of electronic stuff as of recent. He is known as ZuperBlahq on Steve Aoki's I'm in the House.
Then I saw him at the Beats By Dre party at the Times Square Best Buy with Diplo and David Guetta. He is using the same Vestax VCI-300 that I use. You can watch the other videos from JOEDONUT to see the other performances that day...
Last night on Twitter I saw that the Mad Decent crew with Diplo rolled up to the Trouble and Bass party, No Escape from New York. 12th Planet was the guest DJ that night. Here are some of the tweets.
theV: "Lets go to Trouble and Bass" -Will.I.Am
DJGINATURNER: LA DUDES VS NY DUDES & DUDETTE TONIGHT AT @TroubleandBass and it's awesome
ac_slater: RT @babysarahrulz oh boy, wil I am just rolled into @troubleandbass with @diplo , WELCOME TO THE FUTURE LEYLA!!!! @hrtsrevolution
ac_slater: thanks to everyone for coming to @troubleandbass tonight and showing @12thplanet and @flinchpseudo a good time! <3 y'all.
TroubleandBass: Big Up @12thplanet & @Flinch_Psuedo and @diplo @maddecent for bringing Black Eyed Peas to T&B. Another great NO ESCAPE FROM NY!!!
12thplanet: Man last night was too much.. big upples to @troubleandbass posse @dimmakrecs posse @maddecent posse @eiknarf and BEP for holdin it down!
My prediction is that the next release from will.i.am or the BEP crew is going to have some HEAVY BASS! I am actually excited to hear Fergie over a deep wobble. I think it suits her.

I follow Tittsworth on Twitter and I have been seeing tweets from him and other DJs recently that claimed that he would eat a live octopus. I thought to myself, "If anybody is going to eat live sea creatures, it would be Tittsworth." I wanted proof and was waiting for a link to a video or a picture. I finally found it a week later on http://headofrothchild.com/ DJ Reed Rothchild's blog.

Starry Eyed
Ellie Goulding is topping the album charts in the UK right now with her album Lights. Her sound is electronic and poppy like Lady Gaga, La Roux, Black Eyed Peas, and everyone else. I don't think it will be long until we start hearing her here state side. If you look her up on youtube there is already a plethora of remixes from drum and bass to dubstep. Here is the original.
Prior to the release of her debut studio album, it was announced that Goulding topped the BBC Sound of 2010 poll, which showcases the critics, broadcasters and music industry insiders' top choices for rising stars and artists for the coming year. She also won the Critics' Choice Award at the 2010 BRIT Awards which makes her the only artist to top the BBC Sound of... poll and win the Critic's Choice award in the same year.

Movie Trailers: Tron Legacy
Usually films come and go in the theaters and I don't get too excited for them. This has got me so excited. I was smiling when I watched the new trailer for Disney's Tron Legacy. It gives us a little more glimpse into what the story will be about. The last trailer was purely made just for the fans of the original Tron. I am glad they are not doing a re-make or a pre-quel but a continuation of the original 20 years later. I am just disappointed that I have to wait until December of this year to see this film. I won't write too much about these movies just watch the trailers.

If you haven't seen the original, I suggest you rent it. Here's a little taste to wet your whistle.
Daft Punk has created the entire score for the movie.
Seriously, Jeff Bridges + Daft Punk = Win

History Lessons: The Monocle
A monocle is a type of corrective lens used to correct the vision in only one eye. It consists of a circular lens, generally with a wire ring around the circumference that can be attached to a string. The other end of the string is then connected to the wearer's clothing to avoid losing the monocle. The monocle did not become an article of gentlemen's apparel until the nineteenth century. It was introduced by the dandy's quizzing glass of the 1790s, as a sense of high fashion.
Now we all know that the true usage of the monocle stems from those Peeping Tom's who are nearsighted. These voyeurs normally will wear glasses when you see them out in public. They disguise themselves by wearing different clothing, maybe throwing us off with a hat. Yet, the biggest change of their normal everyday wear is the absence of their glasses. When they are out stalking in our neighborhoods they look completely different. How to solve their nearsightedness without being too obvious is the monocle. The monocle can be easily hidden when the voyeur is discovered. Usually you can catch our neighborhood perverts spying through the window amateurishly with their whole face pressed against the glass. An experienced lurker will only show less than half of their face while peering through our windows. When the blinds are down or curtains not completely closed, said creepsters can only see us one eye at a time. This is how the monocle is the perfect tool for neighborhood voyeurs.
After the realization that monocles are the niche eye-wear for snoopers, we find ourselves recalling all of those that sported one. The people that come to mind right away are: Werner von Fritsch; Sylvia von Harden; Joseph Chamberlain; Mohammad Ali Jinnah; Fritz Lang; Major Johnnie Cradock; Ralph Lynn; Karl Marx; G. E. M. Anscombe; Sir Patrick Moore; Chris Eubank; King Taufa'ahau Tupou V; Barnett Newman; Richard Tauber; Colonel Mustard; The Penguin; Edgar Bergen's dummy Charlie McCarthy (Thanks AD); and the notorious, most perverted Mr. Peanut.
Mr. Peanut was born in 1916 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He was the brain-child of a fourteen year-old schoolboy and a local artist hired by Planters Peanuts. Since his conception, Mr. Peanut has appeared in many TV commercials as an animated cartoon character. Yet, those who have had the unpleasant chance of "meeting" Mr. Peanut will tell you what he is like IN REAL LIFE. Mr. Peanut's victims (MPVs) have been voicing their experiences as of recent. With the help of the internet MPVs have networked together to expose the real truth behind the voyeuristic mascot.
I am not saying that all wearers of monocles are going to spy in your window while you undress. What I am saying is that you have to be careful around such people. I have heard that there is a rumored come-back of the monocle in high fashion.

More Music Videos
So for an extended fix of music videos, here we go:
Oh the Yeasayer video has some nudity in it. Its not sexual at all and you don't really notice it. So its NSFW because there are people running down a mountain in the nude.
Yeasayer "Ambling Alp" from Team G on Vimeo.
Congorock - Babylon from Scion A/V on Vimeo.
Here is an epic story from Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros:

Music Video Weekend Special
I should probably make this a weekly thing. I'm gonna post up a bunch of music videos of songs I love. It may not be the "newest" song, but I like it and this is my blog.
Last night on the way to Kooma to see DJ Bis my wife, Serena, had made a mix cd for a friend that we listened to in the car. She put so many good songs on there. I had forgotten about how awesome these songs were. Since I have lost my ipod, I've only been listening to the latest songs on the blogshpere. I wish my wife could mix records, I would be her biggest fan. I'm gonna have to get Ableton and get her to lay down some mix tapes. So here are some of the songs from her mix cd she made.
Cold War Kids, "Audience Of One" from Vern Moen on Vimeo.
enjoy

MOOMBAHTON
Dave Nada is one of the nicest, down-to-earth artists that I have had the pleasure of meeting this past year. Dave is so friendly and approachable. Every time I see him perform he is smiling and having a great time. He gets the crowd moving whether its a public block party in Philly, Steve's Bar Room in DC, or a cousin's friend's basement. Dave recently released a little mixtape which is hosted on DJ Ayers website.
Here's the back story
"I probably shouldn't tell this story, but here goes. Lo ciento Tia Sona!...
My little cousin Jean-Pierre is a huge Nadastrom fan and he's about to graduate from high school. Him and his boy Mike are notorious for throwing these wild skipping parties. For those that don't know, "skipping parties" are when you throw a house party mid-school day and you tell all your friends that morning and everyone who knows about the party skips school to go wild out. Word of mouth only too, no internet/paper trail. Anyhow, around their homecoming last fall they asked if I could dj one of their skipping parties and I, being the supportive/bad seed cousin that I am, agreed. They had a beat up system, but like 329439 speakers all over Mike's basement so it sounded huge. They told me it would last about an hour because cops usually bust it up. The house/neighborhood was right by the woods so it was convenient to bounce and hide if need be.
Anyhow, so here we are at Mike's empty house around 11:30am and everything is set up. Kids start pouring in around noon and the music starts. Mike and JP are dropping Batchata and moving into Reggaeton. This shit was getting crazy. 20 minutes in and the place is PACKED, all latin kids. Haha! I was gettin mad nervous (oldest dude there) and JP was like "yo you gotta go on soon primo!" and I'm thinking "fuck I cant play house/techno shit, I'll get jumped" so I had the idea of slowing down some of the tropical/dutch house stuff I had on cds. Afrojack's "Moombah Remix" being the biggest tune, I said fuck it and turned that shit down to 108 bpm. JP told all his people about me so bamas starting cheering when I went on, haha. And that's when shit popped the fuck off. The minute that "t-t-t-t-turn up the bass!" part came in and dropped the place went insane! I played it all the way til the end and then did the same to Sidney Samson's "Riverside" and EVERYONE is yelling the "riverside motherfucker!" part and shit was just too much. I was losin it and told myself "I need to make some edits of this shit!" And thus, Moombahton was born.
Long story short, neighbors complained a good 15 minutes into my set and threatened to call the cops. Half the party started to bounce and then a few minutes later Mike yells "cops on the way!" and like clockwork this party was done. All in about an hour. I parked down the street and drove both my cousin JP and Mike back to school so they can catch the end of their classes as if nothing ever happened."
