I've been spending a lot of time in the DC/Baltimore area lately. The club and electronic music scene down there is awesome. U Street Music Hall opened, attracting acts that normally would only visit New York and Los Angeles. Cullen Stalin is putting on really good shows with Taxlo and other parties. Nadastrom has become a heavy hitter with big things on deck. I've met a lot of new people in the scene, DJ's, producers, MC's and bloggers. One of the cool people I was introduced to was Billfold. Back in 1998 my friends that I met in high school that would become my closest and most influential peers got me into punk and hardcore music. We all skateboarded and had similar interests and outlooks on life. I was very sheltered from "secular" music growing up in a strict Christian home. This music, new to me, was the rebellious music of the devil that I had not been able to listen to. This counter culture was underground even in '98 and I was very eager to be a part of it. I was going to local shows and making mixtapes for my friends. We literally used cassette tapes on a boom box to make these. Any one remember what those were? Sometimes my mom would find them and throw them in the trash.

The 70's, 80's, and 90's punk and hardcore music influenced my taste in music heavily. The culture of the punk rock shows also influenced me. There would be fights and drinking and smoking, all the things my mother wanted me to be sheltered from. One of the best things that I went to shows for was the girls. They would be in love with these band members no matter how big or small the band was. I would go in and mosh and skank and dance in the pit with a bunch of sweaty over exerted dudes. The memories are just flowing back to me.

I met Stereofaith this past summer at a gig in Delaware. He was able to take a crowd that was more interested in gossip than the music and get them dancing. I don't believe its an easy task and have seen numerous "DJ's" who just will play the one genre of music that they like. No one else could be feeling what they are playing, but they insist on sticking to their guns. I more recently have met Nadastrom. These two have the ability to make anyone dance with their music and can DJ a party until there is sweat on the walls.

I have been anticipating this mixtape since I first heard about it months ago. Finally, here it is.

U Street Music Hall is becoming my favorite venue. New York City's Flashing Lights party is coming to DC's UHall on April 8th. One week before Trouble & Bass start their monthly party. Here's a little background into the trifectic trio: FLASHING LIGHTS is the neon brainchild of some of the city’s most beloved selectors: DJ AYRES (responsible for 7+ sweaty years of The Rub parties at Southpaw), NICK CATCHDUBS (remix/mixtape phenom and co-founder of the hit indie label Fool’s Gold) and JUBILEE (BK bass sweetheart behind her own Nightshifters imprint). Over the past year, these three constantly-touring DJs have worked tirelessly to launch a genuinely fun and unpretentious electronic dance party in their own hometown. DJ Cold Case

About a year ago I moved into my new home in Smyrna, Delaware (read middle of no-where farmland). Our neighbors directly next door just moved from Philly. They are a wonderful couple who are originally from Liberia and St Croix. I love it when they have us over for dinner. They invited us to their wedding where I met their brother/DJ who at the time was playing some awesome African music. I went over to talk to him for a bit and see what kind of equipment he was using. I come to find out that he and I were into the same kind of music. He put on some Chromeo and we had the whole place dancing. DJ Cold Case aka Casey Morris  born in Brooklyn, raised in Liberia and Connecticut, now resides in DC. He started "DJing" when he attended William & Mary. His friends at The J would throw parties and provide the live music. Their fraternity building had a "Party" floor where they had a nice sound system with the speakers hanging from the ceiling. "It (The J) was the residence for Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity but we called it "The J" because we thought of it as our personal club." DJ Cold Case and his friend, Babatunde, use Traktor to cue up the tracks with keyboard shortcuts and "Scratch" with the trackpad. These college parties were only the beginning to Cold Case's hunger to be a better DJ.

Here is one of DJ Cold Case's remix. He tells me its a rough remix that he threw together a few years back. 

About a year ago, he started playing live shows in the DC area. He was using a VCI-100 to learn on. This is what he was using when I met him in May of 2009. I can actually say he was the first one to influence me to pick up an all-in-one controller. He started playing live shows with Dave Bloom at the Upstairs Lounge in DuPont at a party called Beyond. He moved on to play Epic Dance Party with DJ Doc Rok every third Friday. Now you can catch him on Thursday nights spinning at the party Beat Market with DJ Doc Rok at the Rock and Roll Hotel.
