Tron Legacy 3D IMAX in King of Prussia

So I have a voucher for two passes to see Tron Legacy tonight in King of Prussia. It doesn't come out until Friday. I called the theater to ask if it was in 3D. They couldn't tell me if it was going to be in 3D or not. I don't want to see it in 3D for a number of different reasons (but thats another post for another day). The pre-showing is at 7pm, the movie starts at 8pm. The voucher claims first come first serve and there is no guarantee you will be admitted if the theater ends up being over booked. The promoter can give away as many vouchers as they would like. I was really excited to go tonight. Then my reasoning kicked in and I had this chat with my wife over gtalk.

Andy:
nice
i dunno about this tron thing

serenafdee:
Why?

Andy:
its a hike up to KOP and we'd be driving in rush hour traffic

serenafdee:
Not feeling it?

Andy:
I wanna see it, but I'm not feeling the drive and the chance it may be in 3D which is looking more and more the case since I'm studying up on it
Imax 3d tickets cost 17.50 so We have two tickets worth 35.00

serenafdee:
Ok hmm

Andy:
its 78.4 miles from our house
your car gets an avg of 23 mpg?
so 156.8 miles round trip make it 150 and round down to 20 mpg we have 7.5 gal of gas at 3 dollars makes it $22.50 just in gas
plus we will prob eat out so add another ten to fifteen
thats between 30 to 40 dollars
to see a free movie an hour and a half away with no traffic
if we go see any movie in 2D at Dover that starts between 4 and 6pm its only 6 bucks a ticket, 8 bucks a ticket after 6
oh wait matinee is $8 and evening is 10.50
so we could see tron 2D at 4pm this week after friday for 12 bucks
saving ourselves 30 dollars and 4 hours of driving in traffic

TL DR:
I'm such a nerd.

Long Time No Post. Where Did Skrillex Come From?

Skrillex has hit the electo/dubstep scene recently with a few remixes and a couple of releases. I would see his name pop up on dubstep and electro forums and he would be compared to Datsik and Deadmau5 and others. You may know him as Sonny Moore, the former lead singer of From First to Last.

From First To Last - Note To Self
Uploaded by epitaphrecords. - Music videos, artist interviews, concerts and more.

He left From First to Last, having vocal problems and getting an operation, and announced in early 2007 he would pursue a solo career. He toured under a few different variations of his legal name. Fast Forward to Summer of 2010, after playing at LA night clubs as Skrillex for about a year, Sonny releases My Name is Skrillex his first EP. Deadmau5 picks him up on his record label and they release Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites

I believe its producers like Sonny who will migrate the hardcore/emo/scremo scene kids into the electronic dance music scene. They are the kids that are open to it and are growing up.

Another one of my favorites -

This little video interview pretty much sums it up.

Sorry to anyone who still reads this blog, or attempts to see if I've updated it. I've been pretty busy with work and haven't had time or was interested to blog. A lot of cool things are happening in the music circles I follow.

Things I noticed the past couple of days.

Diplo getting to endorse a blackberry. Points to both sides. But RIM... you guys are slacking. Android is taking over.

So Me made a video for Duck Sauce. Its essentially a well edited shout out to Fools Gold fam, sad to say I didn't see Catchdubs. His part must have been cut to insert a few seconds of Kanye. Who cares about Kanye? facepalm

Flufftronix - Unsafe At Any Speed VOL 1

Philadelphia is a treasure chest of artists and producers. Flufftronix is one to keep a watch out for. After his very successful Luvstep mix with Dirty South Joe, Fluff has put together another mix that will keep your heart pounding. With the explosion of Dubstep into the underground electronic dance music genre in the Eastern Coast here in the US, one can only take note of the diversity in the scene. I can't be surprised when my hip-hop lovin thug friends are asking me about the next dubstep party. Hip-hop and dubstep are similar in that they are close in BPM and are mostly driven by the bass. Flufftronix does an amazing drop giving us enough vocals in this mix to satisfy the tastes of many an appreciator of music. Thats where Fluff is different from the other cats in this scene. He has the talent to distinguish how deep to take us into the depths of the underground while treating the mainstream in us with some familiar vocals.

This mix features a lot of great producers in the scene right now: Rusko, Benga, Munchi, Nero, Zombies For Money, Tim Dolla, Drop The Lime, J-Wow and others. Flufftronix takes us on a ride deep into the belly of the beast dropping some heavy stuff. He blends the music well bringing a symphony of bass to your body. This mix should be listened to on a proper system. Keep Fluff on your radar and check out his weekly parties in Philly.

Mort Par Vacille

I've been spending a lot of time in the DC/Baltimore area lately. The club and electronic music scene down there is awesome. U Street Music Hall opened, attracting acts that normally would only visit New York and Los Angeles. Cullen Stalin is putting on really good shows with Taxlo and other parties. Nadastrom has become a heavy hitter with big things on deck. I've met a lot of new people in the scene, DJ's, producers, MC's and bloggers. One of the cool people I was introduced to was Billfold. He hooked me up with his new dubstep mixtape that you have to listen to on a nice system. Laptop speakers will not do this mix justice. Grab it here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=BAVXBIFS

RIP Guru, Keith Elam

I wanted to take a minute and write about Guru's influence on me. Coming from a sheltered musical family, it wasn't until I went to high school in the city did I hear of Gang Starr. In 1998 I was exposed to the music that I have been passionate about for the rest of my life. I went to a chartered school in Wilmington, Delaware with a mix of kids from every background. I made friends that lived in the projects down the street and friends that lived in multi-million dollar mansions. Every generation has their "cliques". These cliques were usually determined by the clothes you wear, the music you listen to, and the activities you did after school. The high school I went to had a dress code, so we were pretty much all dressed the same. I came to high school as a skateboarder with an almost empty music palette. The radio only played alternative rock or mainstream hip hop/R&B. The internet was accessible in most homes by now with broadband. The combination of all these things made a perfect culture for me to be impressionable by great music.

My friends shared their music with me via cassette tape until I got a CD player in 1999. I first heard Gang Starr in the skate video Shorty's Fulfill the Dream on VHS. I recorded the audio of Above the Clouds with all the skateboarding sounds to a cassette and shared it with my friends. Then one of my buddies went on a downloading rampage and got most of the Gang Starr recordings at that time. I was just getting in to hip hop at that time and I am so thankful to have had Guru as one of the first MCs that I loved. It had been unfair to the rest of the hip hop world that I had Gang Starr as my first impression of what hip hop should be like. It's kind of like your first girlfriend/boyfriend; you always compare what comes after to the first. There has been some good hip hop since, but no one has been able to touch Guru and DJ Premier.

Guru was educated, which is a huge deal for me. Uneducated lyricists are garbage and try to get by with witty rhymes. Guru spoke the truth. He spoke on relevant topics. He didn't just rap about how much money he has, or how he was gonna kill you if you step to him, or how many hoes he's been with. His words are timeless and his rhymes paint a picture. Rappers and MCs have come and gone, but Guru has remained. I've only been in the scene for a little over a decade but he owned it for over twenty years.

I wonder if he ever realized how many people he touched with his words? I can say that his words spoke to me from his microphone in the studio across the cassette tape to the magnets that moved the diaphragm of the speakers pushing the vibrations of his words into my ears that affected who I am.

Thank you, Guru. Peace.

Salad Days | Mad Decent | Commonwealth

Back in 1998 my friends that I met in high school that would become my closest and most influential peers got me into punk and hardcore music. We all skateboarded and had similar interests and outlooks on life. I was very sheltered from "secular" music growing up in a strict Christian home. This music, new to me, was the rebellious music of the devil that I had not been able to listen to. This counter culture was underground even in '98 and I was very eager to be a part of it. I was going to local shows and making mixtapes for my friends. We literally used cassette tapes on a boom box to make these. Any one remember what those were? Sometimes my mom would find them and throw them in the trash.

The 70's, 80's, and 90's punk and hardcore music influenced my taste in music heavily. The culture of the punk rock shows also influenced me. There would be fights and drinking and smoking, all the things my mother wanted me to be sheltered from. One of the best things that I went to shows for was the girls. They would be in love with these band members no matter how big or small the band was. I would go in and mosh and skank and dance in the pit with a bunch of sweaty over exerted dudes. The memories are just flowing back to me.

I met Stereofaith this past summer at a gig in Delaware. He was able to take a crowd that was more interested in gossip than the music and get them dancing. I don't believe its an easy task and have seen numerous "DJ's" who just will play the one genre of music that they like. No one else could be feeling what they are playing, but they insist on sticking to their guns. I more recently have met Nadastrom. These two have the ability to make anyone dance with their music and can DJ a party until there is sweat on the walls.

I have been anticipating this mixtape since I first heard about it months ago. Finally, here it is.

From:
Blog » Mad Decent Worldwide Radio #59 - Salad Days | Mad Decent

"Salad Days" is a hardcore punk mix that Nadastrom and DJ
Stereofaith pieced together. Having been raised by the DC punk and
hardcore scenes in the late 80s and 90s, they give a nod to their
musical roots and continue to refer to the DIY ethos as working DJs and
producers. The "Salad Days" mixtape is a celebration of the energy and
passion of punk and hardcore music.
